Wednesday nite English 1A is cancelled, pls read post for info

hey all, I am sorry I have  to miss class today.  it is really important we stay on top of our project.

so here is what we need to do:

We said last week that you needed to  meet with your interviewee(s) and do your first interview with them. and to be sure to write  down what they say, and to record the interview.  Here is a link to ADVICE for how to do interviews.

By this FRIDAY,  I would like you to email me about how the interview(s) went. Please  share what they had to say. and talk about any issues or problems you might have encountered.

If you havent found an interviewee yet, you need to do so!!!
we talked in class about different techniques to find someone. Use those techniques.

Once I hear from you, I will let you know what the further Home work is for this project that will be due next Wed.

Some tips for interviewing.

10 tips for interviewing.

All of this advice comes from students who have done interviews and reported back their experiences.

  1. Be professional--be on time. Make interviewee feel important--because they are.
  2. Dont’ be surprised if the interviewee cancels interview, or arrives late. This matters more to you than them. (Until they start talking. Then it really matters to them.)
  3. Make them comfortable. The more this feels like a conversation, the better.
  4. You may want to send them the questions before the interview. Interviewees WANT to do well, and having the questions ahead of time can relax them.
  5. Don’t talk too much. You KNOW what you think. Let them tell you what THEY think.
  6. If they get off track in their answers, steer them gently back. BUT, pay attention to what they are saying… sometimes what seems “off topic” actually has value.
  7. Don’t ask YES/NO type questions. Ask open ended questions. Example: Do you like Hayward? Is not nearly as effective as What do you like about Hayward?
  8. Be sure to ask follow-up questions when they say something good. Don’t be a slave to the questions. The questions are just a start.
  9. Be sure to record the interview. ALSO, take good written notes. You will want to have BOTH sources.
  10. When interview is over, always ask them if it is OK to contact them with follow up questions.

Paper/Project #2-- South Hayward Citizen Profile

Hey class,

To get this project started, the first thing you need to do is to find someone to interview. They should live in South Hayward, the closer to Tennyson the better. You should select someone who is willing to spend several hours with you, spread out over a few weeks. Someone who doesnt mind their story being told, and having pictures and memories of their life shared.

You may find that the person you are picking should be interviewed along with some one else who "fits" with them in a natural way--a married couple, co-workers, neighbors to each other, etc. In this case, your final project will be about more than one person.

The first thing you need to do is to interview the person/people. The questions below are a start.

  1. Where do you live in South Hayward?
  2. How long have you lived/worked/been in South Hayward/your neighborhood?
  3. What is your history with South Hayward/your neighborhood?
  4. Why do you live/work here?
  5. What has your experience been living/working here?
  6. Thinking about daily your life right now, what currently do you enjoy the most / look forward to the most?
  7. Thinking about daily your life right now, what do you worry about the most / troubles you the most?
  8. What are 3 words that come to mind when you think of South Hayward/your neighborhood?
  9. What song comes to mind when you think of South Hayward/your neighborhood?
  10. What food comes to mind ? (do you have the recipe?)
The questions should act as conversation starters. If they say something that you think needs to be followed-up on, for sure ask it! If you want to add questions, that is fine too.

HW for mon/wed classes, due this Wed the 7th...

ok,

for many of you who have started the paras, the content and ideas are  great...for a lot of us there is some work still to do, so we are asking you to revise your 6 paras for Wed....Be sure to use the para template as a guide to help you with building the paras...

If you havent started your paras yet, now is the time!

Some advice for rewrites:

1. be sure keywords link us back to the questions... be sure to start each para with a keyword phrase that makes it really clear which question we are doing...

2. also, no names of people in 3-4-5s' (like mom, etc) those people are just support for the concepts... so bring them in to the para later after the concept is established...

3. Some of you are starting off your 1st para with a kind of overview of the concept of passion... and some of you in you first para are mentioning all 3 of the passions that you have.. i dont think these kinds of "mini" introductions are needed...

its ok to start with, : One of the passions that I have is......

pls bring your revised paras on wed..
