HW for English 4....due monday... feb 1st

Hey all, so you have a number of stories to read in Sudden Fiction... you will see that they all share a broad trend of being about romantic relationships.

Here are the stories to read--you should read them all.
  1. The Fable (36)
  2. Tent Worms  (96)
  3. Dinner Time (115)
  4. Popular Mechanics (68)
  5. No One's a Mystery  (47)
  6. Pygmalion  (33)
  7. Say Yes (74)
  8. The Signing (205)
  9. The Sock  (177)
  10. Anatomy of Desire (117)
  11. Can-Can  (5)
  12. Song on Royal Street  (29)
  13. A Very Short Story (126)
It's probably a good idea to read them twice, esp. the ones that you may not "get" at first. Don't worry if the story seems hard to follow--do your best and we will clear up things in class.

Here are 2 questions for each story that you will be answering. You should do a short paragraph for each question. You should type this up, and bring it next Monday. (either hard copy or on computer)
  1. What happens in the story?
  2. What is the author trying to tell us about the relationship between men and women?

Violence book, first reading and HW

Hey there, so we are starting on Gilligan's great book, Violence.
The HW below is due by Monday, Feb 1st.

1. For the Reading, pls read the Prologue, pages 1-26.

2. Here are some questions to respond to. Pls generate 1-2 paragraphs per question. Please type up the 3 questions and bring hard copies to class.

  • Why does Gilligan integrate his own family story to start off this book?
  • Why does he make references to American history, geography, literature to start off the book?
  •  What does he mean when he says "All violence is tragic"?

3. For the next part of the HW, imagine that you are some kind of "Dr. Frankenstein," but instead of trying to create a monster, you have a different agenda. You are to imagine that you want to raise up a baby to become a very violent person, What conditions, situations, experiences would you surround the baby with, from a young age until they get older --to ensure a violent person?
