HW for English 1A class, due Monday Feb 22nd

hey all, so our goal for next Monday is to pick 2 more  questions from the essay assignment and write up 3 paras for each question..(Rule of 3!)--making 6 paras

that means that by Monday, you should have done 12 paras total...(bc the previous HW was to do 6 paras...)

if you didn't do the previous 6 paras HW you should do them...and bring them also on Monday

.OR if you did the 6 but they were small paras...you should also revise the 6 paras...making them longer, and bring them as well

the goal is that by Monday, you will have done 12 or so paras......

As for the reading, you should read CH 7 and 8  in the book......

see you Monday!

HW for 102 class, due Monday....Feb 22

hey all, so our goal for next Monday is to pick another question from the essay assignment and write up 3 paras...(Rule of 3!)

that means that by Monday, you should have done 9 paras total...(bc the previous HW was to do 6 paras...)

if you didn't do the previous 6 paras HW you should do them...and bring them also on Monday

.OR if you did the 6 but they were small paras...you should also revise the 6 paras...making them longer, and bring them as well

the goal is that by Monday, you will have done 9 or so paras......

As for the reading, you should read CH 7 in the book......

HW for English 4 --due next monday... Feb 22..

hey all, soooo, we didn't get a lot of writing today from you all, which makes me a lil nervous about the draft day next week on Wed -----

soooo, to deal with that, I think we should do a "pre-draft" that will be due next Monday...

basically what I mean by pre-draft is simply start writing, and try to pull together 5-7 paragraphs ....

Pls bring 2 copies typed of the pre-draft on Monday....

Keep Rule of 3 in play......(example: "Intimacy" is a cool concept, but its TOO big, so if you are writing about intimacy, you will want to generate 3 separate paras that look at 3 different aspects of the bigger concept--in this case, intimacy....)

Here is the Rule of 3 post

http://seanchabot.blogspot.com/2014/01/rule-of-3.html

Here is an overview of what we are looking for in body paras...

SPRING 2016—1st PAPER "Violence"—ENGLISH--McFARLAND (this assignment is for 102 and 1A classes

CHABOT—SPRING 2016—1st  PAPER—ENGLISH--McFARLAND

For our first paper we will be coming to a deeper understanding about Gilligan’s theory of violence. In part, we will be doing this by considering how different aspects of the theory might actually offer insights for a parent in raising their children. You have 5 questions to consider in doing this paper. You should plan to answer at least 4 of them.

1.    You will want to explain what Gilligan means by shame, and discuss the role it plays in his theory.
2.    You will want to discuss the influence of childhood and environment in the “creation” of violent persons.
3.    You will want to discuss what is meant by “violence is a symbolic language,” and in light of this concept, offer your opinion about spanking—physically disciplining children.
4.    You also should discuss 3 or more ideas in the book that a parent could use to help them in raising a child.
5.    Finally, what relationship do you see between Gilligan’s concept of “Structural Violence” and the notion of “Family.”

Throughout this essay, you should bring in ideas and examples found in our books, handouts, or even other outside sources in order to support your points. Of course you MUST integrate quotes. You need to average 1-2 quotes per body paragraph. We will be talking about how to effectively do this.

When you write this essay you do not need to number the questions. Rather, we will rely on your use of KEYWORDS and CONCEPTS in the paragraph topic sentences to know where you are in the essay.

In this paper you often will be summarizing and paraphrasing the ideas of others—we will need to make certain that in doing so that you do not plagiarize. This will be a crucial part of your assignment here.

ENGLISH 4—SPRING 2016—ESSAY #1—Sudden Fiction

ENGLISH 4—SPRING 2016—ESSAY #1—Sudden Fiction

Many of the stories in Sudden Fiction feature relationships between men and women as a central topic. We have at least 12 that we can consider:

The Stories: Popular Mechanics, Say Yes, Tent Worms, Dinner Time, The Anatomy of Desire, The Signing, The Fable, Can-Can, Pygmalion, No One’s a Mystery, Song on Royal Street, The Sock, A Very Short Story….

For this essay assignment you will want to read through each of these stories. It will probably be necessary to read them more than once. You will no doubt begin to see interesting similarities/differences between the stories; the stories may even begin to “speak” to each other. Your next step is to begin to ask yourself what kind of themes emerge in the stories; there is a wide variety of possible themes to consider, including: youth, age, intimacy, estrangement, communication, violence, boredom, sickness and health, power, children, lies, truth….and much more.

For this paper your central question to consider is: What are these authors trying to tell us about relationships?

But the question as asked is no doubt too big. You will need to narrow it down by focusing on 2-3 themes of your choice. You may want to pick themes that relate to each other so that you can build a more developed argument.  In developing your arguments, you might also consider taking an approach that looks at: How do we stay on the time line of love? What can lead to us falling off? How do we climb back on?

One valuable tip in writing a paper like this is to NOT start off paragraph topic sentences with plot/names of characters/title of story. This is crucial! Instead, consider starting off the paragraph with 3-5 sentences that establish in some detail the CONCEPT you want to discuss. THEN, you can bring in a moment from one of the stories to support your concept. Another good approach is to bring in support from DIFFERERNT stories to support a concept. In other words, it works very well to have 2 even 3 stories being quoted in one paragraph. For sure every paragraph will need to have at least one piece of support.

You don’t need to bring every story into your paper. But you should bring in at least 5-7 stories through the course of the paper.

Page minimum is 6 pages.

Some ways to get started doing the first paper for English 4

In a different post, you will see the assignment for Paper #1 in English 4. (I will also be giving you a hard copy of the assignment.)

As you are getting started on paper 1 for Eng 4, you should ask yourself: What am I trying to argue, what am trying to explore?

The goal is to build a paper that has a number of moving parts. How many moving parts is not always certain, but you should consider working with 5-7 concepts to build your paper. (3 concepts isn’t enough, for example).

We talked in class about a number of different ways to go about shaping the paper.
Below is a list:

1.     Problem/Solution is a classic approach to building a paper. You can set it up by discussing 3-4 types of problems, and 2-3 possible solutions.
2.     Theory and Application: with this approach, you select a theory (often you can take it from it another discipline, like Psych, or Econ, etc.), then you apply the theory to the stories we are working with.
3.     Explore a metaphor: in this approach you take a metaphor (relationship as Dance, for example) and you apply it to the stories we are working with.
4.     Explode a concept: in this approach you take one (maybe 2) concept and look at it from a LOT of different angles to help build your paper.
5.     Stringing Concepts: in this approach you take 5-7 different concepts and you string them together to develop an argument.
6.     Who, What, Where, etc.: in this approach you develop questions that are based on the classic WWWWHW set of questions.

As you develop your paper, it is probably a good idea to know which of these approaches you are using. What you don’t want to do is to combine a little of each of these without knowing that is the case. It will mess up your logic. It is OK to perhaps combine a couple of these as you develop the paper.

Good luck  with the paper.

A last trick to keep in mind. As you are using any of these approaching, what you are really doing is trying to demonstrate the WAY things relate. How does this lead to that? What causes this? What happens if I do this, and also do that? Etc.

So you want to keep in mind logic transitions: they are actually pretty simple transition words like: BUT, IF, ON THE OTHER HAND, THUS, HOWEVER, THEREFORE, WHEN, -------etc. (there are a lot more)

The point here is that you should keep an eye out in your paper for these kinds of words. You WANT them in the paper, bc it tells you that you are finding and demonstrating relationships among and between concepts.

HW for English 4 class...due monday...

Hey there, sorry I didnt post this sooner...

Here is the HW that is due next Monday...

You are to go thru the 12 stories that we have been reading, and answer these questions:

1. Where on the "Love Timeline" is the couple in the story?
2. Has the couple fallen off the Timeline? If so, why have they fallen off?

SO, what you are basically doing is using the Timeline that we came up with to try to understand the status of the relationship that makes up the core of each story...
\
you should type up your responses for each of the 12 stories and bring them to class.....

(It is 12 stories , bc you arent doing "the Fable" for this HW....the reason being of course that that story is actualy ABOUT the timeline, lol)
