TAKE HOME FINAL for English 102 and English 1A ---Fall semester 2016

CHABOT COLLEGE—Fall 2016—Take home written exam—ENGLISH

In this class we investigated ideas about a dream school and about what matters to you when it comes to education; we learned about what is going on with the planet (Last Hours); we designed plans for a Sustainability Center; We met (briefly) Chris McCandless from Into the Wild. For this final assignment you will be bringing together these different elements of the semester to address this larger question:

1.     How do you see these different elements of the semester relating to each other? (this question asks you to synthesize, bring together the different things we did this semester. You don’t need to bring together ALL at one time, you can compare 2 things for example.)
2.     What does it mean to be educated in the 21st Century? (another way to think about this question is to ask yourself what you think we need to teach to students as we move into the future.)
3.     What did you take away from this semester?

These questions should have Rule of 3 applied. The goal is 7 to 9 paragraphs. You don’t need to do an intro. Think of this more like a final exam, that you can do at home.

You have a number of different sources you will be using to build this discussion.
Into the Wild, of course, is one. Another is Last Hours. Also keep in mind the different movies we watched.

Here is a partial list: High Tech High, World’s best Kindergarten, Jeff Bliss, Earthships, Story of Stuff, I teach my Neighbors’s kids, Crude Awakening,

Another source is Recycling the Gift. It has all sorts of ideas related to question 2.

You also have The Passion Project, a movie.

You need to integrate quotes from Into the Wild. You need to average 1-2 quotes per paragraph of the paper.  (Keep the “Rule of 3” in mind as a way to push your discussion.)

The page minimum is 4-5. Doing more is cool too.

Check this website out for ideas about alternative building materials...

http://constructionclimatechallenge.com/2016/07/07/green-building-materials-that-are-alternatives-to-concrete/

SOme advice on doing the Sustainablity Center proposal...

hey there,

so the advice here can work for both Q#1 and Q#3.

Basically, we are suggesting that you move from general to specific in your paras...

GENERAL: in this para (or 2 paras) you would talk about the general shape, size, structure of the building. Don't just say "it will be a circle"--give us more detail about size, number of floors, special shape, etc.

MIDDLE: in these 2-3 paras you would talk about the specific spaces--what happens in the different rooms or spaces in your center

SPECIFIC: in these 2-3 paras you would talk about specific building features....such as solar, or water, art installations, etc...

Of course you will also want to talk about building materials that you are using, and that kind of thing... that kind kind of stuff can go  in the "SPECIFIC" or the GENERAL paras....

For the QA#3, instead of "building" you would substitute "garden" in the advice above...

see you

Paper #3 essay assignment… for 102 and for 1A...

Hey there, here is the new essay assignment for paper #3.

The Sustainability Center
For this 3rd essay assignment, you have a Design Challenge. The broad challenge is that you are being asked to design the Chabot Sustainability Center.
We are organizing this design effort around 3 major questions. (For sure you can raise other questions and areas of discussion, in addition to these 3 questions.)

1.    How would you design it?
2.    How do you imagine the Center being used?
3.    How would you imagine the Sustainability Center interacting with the Knowledge Garden and the nature around the Center?

You should write this essay as if it is a proposal. Your audience for the proposal is Chabot administration.  Actual business proposals have a number of different features. You should do some research and see what these features are. You should include some of these business proposal features in this proposal, in addition to answering the questions.

·      You should devote some time to talking about the environmental problems that students face that the Sustainability Center will help address.
·      Really nail why it is that the Sustainability Center is crucial for students and teachers.
·      You should for sure do Rule of 3 (or 4 or 5 , lol)  in answering the questions.
·      You should integrate how other disciplines fit into the Center, so that it is not just a place where Environmental Studies students go.
·      You should include pictures, and building design layouts.

Even though you might not use quotes in a real proposal, for this essay you will be using quotes in your body paragraphs. (They actually will probably help the persuasiveness of the proposal.) You will want to incorporate Design concepts into the proposal. We will be talking about Design principals….
Make the project be WOW!
In other words, surprise yourself. Surprise your audience. NO idea is too weird. Your goal is to make this the coolest building on campus, truly world class.
The Page minimum is 7 pages writing. (The pics, etc. are in addition to the 7 pages of writing.)

Essay #2 for English 1A and 102

hey there, if you can't find your hard copy, here is the essay #2…..

English —2nd   Formal Essay —McFarland--Fall—2016

For this essay we will be investigating issues related to our book, Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight, and to the movie, Crude Awakening. One of the intriguing arguments that gets built in both the book and the movie is that this contemporary life that many of us take for granted, is actually the result of specific events in history, especially including the discovery and rise of Oil.

For this paper you will be examining this claim and taking a stand about whether or not you think this is true.  The following questions are intended to offer some guidance to you as you build your paper. It is OK to argue more than one side of a question if that is how you feel. There are a lot of questions here. You can skip one or two of them if you like.  And you can explore other questions that you come up with yourself, but be sure to run them by me first.

1.     How do you explain the amazing population growth from 1860 up to today? that we see in the chart in the book on page 15 ?
2.     What are some consequences of adding this additional 5 billion people to the planet, from 1860 up to today?
3.     Why do we allow these consequences to happen?
4.     What is your own relationship to energy use?
5.     Hartmann argues that we are modern day Slaves; what is your opinion of this metaphor as a way to explain our situation?
6.     How do we gain freedom from this slavery?

In order to support your points, you need to use the ideas found in the book, the movie, your research, and in any other handouts, books, etc. that we have access to.
You should try to include more than one quote per paragraph whenever possible, two is good! Quote length in a paper of this length should be no more than 1-2 lines.

The essay’s page minimum is 6 full pages…(BNDJTM…) Be sure you do Rule of 3 for each question that you pick. That will help you reach the page minimum.
Be careful that you don’t simply retell the history of the how humans have used energy over the years. Use these moments in history to SUPPORT the analytic points you want to make. Paragraph topic sentences should start with concepts. Paragraph topic sentences should also feature KEYWORDS, which are taken from the essay assignments tasks.

Essay # 1 for English 1A AND FOR English 102

some of you told me that you didnt have the hard copy of the essay that we handed out last week... so, here it is below. The Home work Questions you are being asked to do refer to the 6 questions below....

Essay #1--Your Dream School—McFarland—Chabot Fall 2016

For this first Essay assignment, you are going to dream. You are being asked to dream about creating a different vision for how a college might function. Below are some questions to consider. You should plan to answer all the questions, and it is REALLY important that you do RULE of 3 for each question. (All that really means is that for each question, you should try to come up with 3 separate concepts. Each concept should be developed inside its OWN paragraph.) (If you skip one question, that is OK, and if you do only 2 paras for one or two of the questions, that is OK too. The goal should be at least 12 body paras for this paper.)

1.     When you analyze all the different schools you have attended, what would you say are 3 major problems that you notice?
2.     If you were going to design a school that did the best job of bringing the most out of its students, and uncovering and unleashing student passion, what might be some features of this educational setting?
3.     When a student graduates from your school, what would you want them to Be, or Feel, or Think, or Know?
4.     How might teachers be different?
5.     What role might Student Voice play in your dream school?
6.     What role might Nature play in the school?

You must average a minimum of 1-2 short quotes per paragraph.  Quote length in a paper of this length should be no more than 1-2 lines. Remember that the video prompts you have watched are a great source of quote support.

The essay’s page minimum is 6 full pages…(BNDJTM…)

Paragraph topic sentences should start with concepts. Paragraph topic sentences should also feature KEYWORDS, which are taken from the questions/prompts that you have been exploring.

The paper is due ________________________First draft is due _______________
(Of course, before the "first draft" date, you will be bringing in and sharing paragraphs from your paper....)
