English —4th Formal Essay —McFarland--Fall—2017

English —4th  Formal Essay —McFarland--Fall—2017

For this final essay we will be investigating an important issue related to our semester together. As we discussed in class last week, one of the intriguing issues that “Crucial Ones” (like you) face, is: how do we encourage others to get involved?

The following questions are intended to offer some guidance to you as you build your paper. You can come up with your own questions. And it is OK to argue more than one side of a question if that is how you feel.

  1. Why DON’T people get more involved in the issues that impact their lives?
  2. Why don’t cities more  effectively engage their citizens?
  3. What can a city do to more effectively engage their citizens?
  4. What are some ideas that might encourage people to get more involved? (These can be practical and/or theoretical.)

You can bring in ideas and examples you know from other countries, other areas of life.
You should interview 3 or so people for this paper, and their quotes and ideas should be up in the paper.
If you want to focus this paper on the issue you addressed in paper #3, that is fine.
For sure you should do Rule of 3 in the paper.
In order to support your points, you need to use ideas found in LHAS, the essays and other materials I provide you, your own research, interviews you will do, and in any other handouts, books, etc. that you have access to.
You should  average a minimum of 2 short quotes per paragraph. Quote length in a paper of this length should be no more than 1-2 lines. s

The essay’s page minimum is 6 full pages…(BNDJTM…)
Paragraph topic sentences should start with concepts. Paragraph topic sentences should also feature KEYWORDS, taken from the essay assignment questions.

The paper is due via email on Dec 22.

First draft is due on the day of your final for the English class.
