HW for the Wed nite English class... one thing is due by the 27th, the rest is due on Dec 4th...

You have 5 different things to do for HW ...some of the work is practical (like planning for the Culture Fest) and some of the work is theoretical, to give you some background about why we are doing this work in Hayward.

1. We are starting to plan what we would like to do for the Longwood Culture Fest.
Here are possible categories of activities/events that could take place:
  1. Fun activities/ events for Kids
  2. Holiday Related activities/ events
  3. Food (this can have a cultural feel, or a holiday feel, or a "make it at the Fest" feel)
  4. Your Community Garden projects
  5. Community Projects  (these can be projects that previous students have done, or they could be new project that you  come up with)
  6. Plastic Pollution (deWit class)
  7. Longwood Parents projects (we dont know yet what these will be)
Your HW that is due on Wednesday, the 27th is to pick one  possible thing you would like to do at the Culture Fest. Pls write up a 2-3 paragraph summary of what you think you want to do. Try to be as specific as you can about what you want to do. Include materials you think you might need, and directions about how you would DO the activity.  You will be emailing this to me by Wed the 27th.... I will get back to you about the project... it is likely I will say "great, do this!" ---but I might also offer some revisions to the project, or even perhaps ask you to consider doing something different.

The rest of this HW below is due on  Dec 4th when we come back to class.

2. This is a link to a great article about this thing called Placemaking. Please read the article and answer these 2 questions:  In your own words, What is Placemaking? What do you think about it as a way to build community?

3. What song comes to mind when you think of Hayward ? Why? Write 1-2 paras about Why...

4.  This is the link to the Asset Maps that Chabot students created. Browse through all 4 categories. (Stories / Histories / Assets / Aspiriations What is a trend that you see in each category? (A trend is an idea or concept that you see occurring in more than one place)

5. Please read this short article about social capital (which simply means assets or strengths that a society has...) ... there are 6 types of capitals discussed. Once you read this, rank the 6 types in order of importance. There is no right answer, but you should write up your reasons for why you rank them in the order that you do.
