CHABOT
COLLEGE—Fall 2016—Take home written exam—ENGLISH
In this
class we investigated ideas about a dream school and about what matters to you
when it comes to education; we learned about what is going on with the planet
(Last Hours); we designed plans for a Sustainability Center; We met (briefly)
Chris McCandless from Into the Wild. For this final assignment you will be
bringing together these different elements of the semester to address this
larger question:
1.
How do you see these different
elements of the semester relating to each other? (this question asks you to synthesize, bring together the different
things we did this semester. You don’t need to bring together ALL at one time,
you can compare 2 things for example.)
2.
What does it mean to be educated
in the 21st Century? (another way to think about this
question is to ask yourself what you think we need to teach to students as we
move into the future.)
3. What did you take away from this semester?
These
questions should have Rule of 3 applied. The goal is 7 to 9 paragraphs. You
don’t need to do an intro. Think of this more like a final exam, that you can
do at home.
You
have a number of different sources you will be using to build this discussion.
Into
the Wild, of course, is one. Another is Last Hours. Also keep in mind the
different movies we watched.
Here is
a partial list: High Tech High, World’s best Kindergarten, Jeff Bliss,
Earthships, Story of Stuff, I teach my Neighbors’s kids, Crude Awakening,
Another
source is Recycling the Gift. It has all sorts of ideas related to question 2.
You
also have The Passion Project, a movie.
You need
to integrate quotes from Into
the Wild. You need to average 1-2 quotes per paragraph of the paper. (Keep the “Rule of 3” in mind as a way to push
your discussion.)
The
page minimum is 4-5. Doing more is cool too.
