Hey all, first off,  thanks so much if you went to the Pumpkin Fest last Saturday. If you didnt make it, we missed you@!

We now  need to get back our focus on the project proposal, so we will need to turn in 3 HW questions next Tuesday!

These 3 Questions are all Home work that you should have already done... (they were all assigned last week or the week before.) Some of you have handed in the questions already. If so, you are cool.

You will be graded on these 3 questions as if they are an  actual essay... so it is crucial you turn them in next Tuesday, and that you do a good job on each question ....

(Do RULE OF 3 for each question--which means do 3 paras for each question) -
-if you already have done this work then you are in good shape.... just bring a typed hard copy this Tuesday... here are the 3 questions...(these questions are of course taken from the proposal project)

 1. Please provide data, case studies, past experiments/experiences, success stories from other cities, etc. to support why you believe your project will be successful. (Q#14)
  2.  What need is being filled, or what problem is being addressed by your project? (Q#5)
  3. What makes your project innovative?  (Q#4)

For those of you who are also doing After Action Reports about the Pumpkin Fest, . It will also be due next Tuesday. The report should be about 1-2 pages....those of you who went to the event, you are done, and dont need to write up anything....

ALSO, next week we will be talking about your interviews... you should all have completed 5-7 interviews by next Tuesday.... that will make about 25 or so for each group...

HW for the Monday nite 1A class ...due Monday, Oct 22nd.

Homework that is due Monday, Oct 22nd.

Ok, the work is starting for this project. It is crucial that you stay in contact with each other, and that you each do your part.

1. The first thing you will is do the necessary research to make it possible to address this question: Please provide data, case studies, past experiments/experiences, success stories from other cities, etc. to support why you believe your project will be successful.

You will each be doing this research independently, and you will each turn in 1-2 pages of writing that summarizes what you found in your research. (This means that as a team, you will have between 5-8 pages total that can go towards that final project.)  Pls include links in your HW.

2. A big part of this work is interview research.
To get started, ask yourself what you would like to ask South Hayward people about the project.
It can be questions that you simply dont know the answer to, like "where should we hold our event.?"
or it can be questions that reveal personal preferences or opinion. Pls come up with 10 possible questions.
From the 10 you will need to develop an interview survey that has 7 or so questions.
Once you have the 7 or so questions (you can keep it at 10 or so if you really like the questions),
A. your team should create the survey--You can use google to do this
B. Send me the survey, so I can offer advice--You should send it by Tomorrow nite--I will advise you
C. you will each interview 4-5 people from South Hayward, this week.
D. You will share the results of these interviews with your team (and me) next Monday.

Each member of your team will give the survey to at least 5 community members
from South Hayward. If your team has, for example, 4 members, and you each survey 7 people = 28 people.
That is a good sized interview pool.

Once you do the interviews, your task is to trend out the interviews.
You will each do this with your individual interviews.
Then you will do a mega-trending that combines all the individual trends.

If you want some of your questions to have number answers, or ranking answers, that is fine.

But some of the questions should be written answers. (you can do the actual writing if the person just wants to talk.
Avoid yes / no style questions  ...also you  should really try to do video interview of the person if possible.

Essay #2: Project Proposal --this is the assignment for all of the Fall English classes....

Essay #2: Project Proposal
For this essay assignment, you have a Design and Prototyping Challenge. The broad challenge is that you are being asked to design and prototype something that addresses an issue or issues in Hayward's Tennyson Corridor. Your team can create an event, or a structure, or a relationship, or a collaboration, or an activity--or something else that we can discuss together.
You should write this essay as if it is a proposal. Your team will each be writing different parts of the proposal. For the final proposal, you will be turning it in as one mega-document that combines all your different sections.

Your audience for the proposal is the City of Hayward. Actual business/design proposals have a number of different features. We will be sharing with you what those features are. You should include these business proposal features in this proposal, in addition to answering the questions below.
Each proposal question below should be answered in detail. Do not  just give a one sentence answer. You should include picture and design layouts.

Even though you might not use quotes in a real proposal, for this essay you will be using quotes in your body paragraphs. They actually will probably help the persuasiveness of the proposal. You can pull quotes from essays we have read, from interviews that you do,  as well as from outside sources, and from the Hayward City materials.)

You will be writing this proposal as a group.
For all the categories below, you really want to write lots of paras (3-4).

  1. Please describe in detail, what exactly is your project?
  2. What Opportunity Area(s) does your project fit inside?
  3. What  existing assets in the community can you  leverage to complete your project? Describe in great detail how you will use the asset to execute your project.
  4. What makes your project innovative?
  5. What need is being filled, or what problem is being addressed by your project? What is the issue that you are addressing and why does it matter?
  6. How does your project fit in with or complement the existing Tennyson Corridor?
  7. Where in the Corridor do you imagine your project will be situated?
  8. Who is the audience for your project? (It usually doesn’t work to say “everybody”--that usually means you have not focused deeply enough on your project details.)
  9. How will people interact with your project?
  10. What materials will you need to do create your project? Be specific about type of materials and quantity of each.
  11. What community members might want to take part in the project? (These people can be found while doing the survey interviews. The goal should be 3 community members)
  12. What steps will it take to complete your project? Please be very specific here about this. This should be set up as a timeline.
  13. What are the  Interview trends you found based on the interviews you do.
  14. Please provide data, case studies, past experiments/experiences, success stories from other cities, etc. to support why you believe your project will be successful.
  15. What is your budget for your project? You have $2,000 budget. (Please be specific and detailed about what will need to be purchased, including small stuff like nails, etc.

Your proposal should also include a Cover Page, cover letter, table of contents, budget page, your team’s bios. Interview survey template that your team creates. Interview trends based on the interviews you do.
Please include drawings, pictures, or plans for your project ...make it look colorful and professional.

1. assign an aspect to each group member
2. each membrer do some research, talk to someone(s) who might know more about this aspect of the project....
3. once you have more details, write up a 2-3 para summary of your aspect of the project...
