English —1st  Formal Essay —McFarland--Fall—2018

For this first essay we will be investigating an important issue related to our semester together. As we have been discussing in class, you are going to be invited to make an impact on a local community. For that to happen, it is important for the community to get involved. Of course, that is not always easy to do.

The following questions will guide you as you build your paper. It is OK to argue more than one side of a question if that is how you feel.

1. Why DON’T people get more involved in the issues that impact their lives?
2. What can a city do to more effectively engage their citizens?
3. What are some ideas that might encourage people to get more involved? (These can be practical and/or theoretical.)
4. What are YOUR passions and interests that could perhaps make an impact on a larger community?

You can bring in ideas and examples you know from other countries, or other areas of life.
You must interview 3 or so people for this paper, and their quotes and ideas should be in the paper. Try finding people who know what they are talking about. I will explain more about this....
For sure you should do Rule of 3 in the paper.
In order to support your points, you need to use ideas found in essays and other materials I provide you, your own research, interviews you will do, and in any other handouts, books, etc. that you have access to.
You should  average a minimum of 2 short quotes per paragraph. Quote length in a paper of this length should be no more than 1-2 lines.

The essay’s page minimum is 6 full pages…(BNDJTM…)
Paragraph topic sentences should start with concepts. Paragraph topic sentences should also feature KEYWORDS, taken from the essay assignment questions.

The paper is due ________________.
