English 4 ---advice on last paper,

tonight in class, we went over some advice about how to do this paper. Here is that advice:

1. For sure you will want to use keyword phrases to start off your paragraphs. The key word phrases are of course taken from the essay questions. So, for example, a possible keyword phrase for Q5 might be: One of the ways to create change in the heart of a bigot is.....

Below are the 5 questions---in italics is the advice we offered for each question:
What exactly is “Privilege”?
This is basically a question that asks you to define the word. The trick here is NOT to use the dictionary. Put it in your own words, and use some clever examples that are your own (you could also use examples from our prompts.) This question can be answered in 1 or 2 paras. You dont need to Rule of 3 this question.

What is the connection between Privilege and Racism /Heterosexism/Classism?
FOR SURE you will want to Rule of 3 this second question. That means you will be writing about 3 different ways that Privilege interacts with the "isms" in the question. That means 3 paras. Look for strong verbs to describe the interactions you see. For example, you could perhaps lay out an opening topic sentence like this: One of the connections between Privilege and Racism / Heterosexism / Classism is that Privilege often hides the kinds of violent behaviors associated with these "isms" behind a veneer of 'civilized' behavior....

What are possible shortcomings in the “Live and Let Live” philosophy and how are these shortcomings tied to the notion of Privilege?
Can you see that this is actually 2 different questions. You should consider doing 2 diff paras.

McIntosh says privilege is “invisible”—what does she mean and do you agree with her?
Same with this--Can you see that this is actually 2 different questions. You should consider

In light of Privilege, what particular challenges are there to opening the heart of a bigot—that is, in creating some change in them?
FOR SURE this Question should be Rule of 3. You should come up with 3 diff ways that bigots can be changed. this means 3 diff paras....

SO, you are looking at 10-12 body paras, along with your 3 para intro that features Hook, Book, and Cook.

Paper #4 for English 4----- “Two Towns of Jasper” and “Laramie Project”

Chabot College—Spring 2015—Paper #4—McFarland

“Two Towns of Jasper” and “Laramie Project”

For this next assignment we will try to come to some kind of understanding of how these terrible crimes could have occurred and consider how they might be avoided in the future. It goes without saying that these murders were horrific and that nobody excuses them. But as Peggy McIntosh writes in her famous essay “White Privilege” it is perhaps mistaken to think of these acts as only “individual acts of meanness” and not as the result of “invisible systems conferring dominance on a group.”  Her essay can be found on the web:

https://www.isr.umich.edu/home/diversity/resources/white-privilege.pdf

You will need to access it and download it and print it to bring to class each week from here on out. It will serve as the conceptual underpinning for this assignment. Here are some possible questions—and we will get more …..

What exactly is “Privilege”?
What is the connection between Privilege and Racism /Heterosexism/Classism?
What are possible shortcomings in the “Live and Let Live” philosophy and how are these shortcomings tied to the notion of Privilege?
McIntosh says privilege is “invisible”—what does she mean and do you agree with her?
In light of Privilege, what particular challenges are there to opening the heart of a bigot—that is, in creating some change in them?

For this paper you will want to bring in “The Written Works” if you think it can help you explore privilege and class and institutional ‘rules.’
For this paper you will also want to do some of your own research to gain further background about these issues. The internet is a good place to start. The PBS site  tied to “Two Towns of Jasper” has relevant materials, and offers some great links to explore. If you want to include interviews that you do, that would be great. You may also consider referencing our other texts that we have been reading during the semester

2 quotes per paragraph is expected.

One great place to start:

The paper is due May 30th by email. First draft is due May 20th.
Page minimum is 6. But do a lot more than that… how is that for teacher advice, lol.

English 102 and 1A Paper #4 ---RISK

For this last essay assignment, you are being invited to think about Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild” through the lens of "RISK."

What makes this essay different is that unlike the earlier papers where you were usually guided as to how to organize the paper, and given questions, for this #4 essay you will be deciding for yourself how to organize it.

What that really means is that you should come up with 4-5 "sections" of the paper. A section should be substantial enough that you can then do Rule of 2 or 3 for each section. In that way you will generate 10-15 paragraphs.

(Of course, ALL the body paragraphs need to have 1-2 quotes--preferably 2!).

There are a number of different ways to come up with sections of an essay. One way is to generate questions; another is to do a Brainstorm that you then ReREAD in order to see what sections might be lurking there; another technique is to come up with different sub-concepts related to Risk. (Sometimes a combination of different approaches will get you started.) We will be working together to get started on the paper. Once you get rolling you will need to think about homework:

Your Homework that will be due by Monday May 17:

1. Finish reading “Wild.”
2. Create a detailed outline of your paper. It should have 4 or so sections, and each section should have 3 or so concepts.
3. Once you have created your outline, please write up 4-6 of your paragraphs, so that we can begin to see how your paper is going.

You will need to integrate “Into the Wild” into this paper, as a point of contrast or comparison, but the heart of the paper is to be “Wild.”

You can also bring in other sources, either new ones that you find, or older ones we may have done together in class.
Good luck---remember, this paper is a chance for you to really go deep and personal about Risk, and to combine your personal feelings with academic analysis.

Have some fun with it!

Page minimum is 6 full pages....

here are 3 things to do:

1. 3-5 minute overview of what happens in the chapter..(like most memoirs, she sometimes jumps around in time, so you will want to account for that...)

2. 3 quotes that you especially like..what do you like about them...

3.  In what ways does your chapter contents (concepts) speak to, relate to, contrast with, compare to, Into the Wild, and Chris?

HW for English 4 class..due this Wed the 6th

Hey there, so here is the HW we assigned last week, that is due this Wed, the 6th.

The first thing is please go to this link:

https://www.isr.umich.edu/home/diversity/resources/white-privilege.pdf

and print out and read this article.  It is a very famous article about privilege that was written by Peggy McIntosh.

You have some questions to consider after you read it:

1. In your own words, what does "privilege" seem to mean, in the way she is talking about it?
2. What does she mean when she writes, "hierarchies are interlocking"?
3. Look at that list of "26 effects of Privilege"--which ones can you apply to yourself? Which ones do you find most interesting?

Also, we are starting on Laramie Project, by Moises Kaufmann.

I would like you to try to have it read by Wed night so we can start to talk about it.

Homework for the 102 and 1A class, due this Wed

Hey there, so this is the HW that was assigned last Wed and due Monday (today, May 4)
but bc i wasnt in class today, it is going to be due this Wed the 6th instead.

As you know we are starting on "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed.
For the reading  you should read the Prologue, and then read at least up to page 43. (Go further if you can!)

for the writing:

1. What is the symbolism of the picture on the front of the book (it is the pic of the boot.)? Do a paragraph answer.

2. What kind of person does Cheryl seem to be? (Do rule of 3 with this question, and build 3 paras, using support,)
