HW due next week for the 1A classes

first thing is to get and bring the book!

(dont forget the HW that was due THIS week, (the 3 chapters to read , etc....

Writing assignment:

This is an imagination exercise---you will be going into the mind of your pet, to try to get into their thoughts and spirit and body. You will be imagining what they are thinking, feeling, needing, etc... ----the goal is to leave your own brain behind, and to see if you can enter the mind of the fellow creature.... use your (their) 5 senses....try to stay away from concepts, and instead explore the senses....and the details of their world....you could maybe write about "a day in thelife" of the animal you chose..you can do it in the "I" voice ...or in third person (he, she)

this is an exercise that will take some time... you should plan to sit with the creature to get closer to it, literally and figuratively. ----

you can do it as a poem, or as prose......take your time... to get into the head space needed to do this...

Reading ass. :

3 more chapters:

Man against the Universe pg 207
The Last Neanderthal pg139
and a 3rd chapter of your choosing....

Essay #4 -- due dec 18th by email....

For this essay #4, you are going to be exploring these questions:

  1. What did you "discover" when you attempted to get closer to nature, by spending time in nature and/or by spending time with an animal(s)? (this question is asking you to think about what you learned about yourself in trying to get closer to nature. Thus, Q1 is a lot like Q5, SO, you only need to answer Q1 OR Q5.)
  2. What does Eiseley seem to doing with his writing?
  3. What is he trying to teach us?
  4. What do you think of Eiseley's efforts to look for the poetic aspects of life out in the biological world? (Most trained biologists don't do this in their writing or work.) (this Q kind of answers Q2 , at least for one of your Rule of 3 paragraphs..
  5. What did you learn this semester about your own relationship with nature?
  6. What did you learn this semester?

The paper is due by email on Dec 18, Friday.
We will do draft day on the day of the Final for your class....
We will also do pre-drafts next week.

this paper will have the same formatting as your other papers:
  1. 3 para intro
  2. 1-2 quotes per para
  3. The Star Thrower needs to be quoted in your paper
  4. You may also quote from other sources too...but the bulk need to come from Eiseley's book
  5.  5 page minimum

Notes from Thurs nite 1A that can help 102 class and 1A class with paper #3

Hey there, these are some rough notes from class on thurs.... you might find them helpful;....

one way to get into the paper, is to first think about what isn’t working with education…this can be personal … this can be from memory… of course it can also be researched , academic, etc…
You can include negative thoughts about education in 3-4-5 (topic sentences)  and in commentary…to set up your POSITIVE  concepts...(think of your concepts as solutions...._)

Another way to get a foot hold into the paper  is to ask for yourself: what should be the goal of school?

Some big concepts that can be explored (and then Rule of 3’d)

Limits of Formal Education—(opposite of that could be your concepts
  • ·    Structure of the classroom
  • ·    The “systems” of college
  • ·    Curriculum (what is taught)
  • ·    Pedagogy (how it is taught)
TRAVEL—

  • Self education----
  • education by the tribe
  • education by family
  • power of technology to shape education
    NATURE
  • Nature as a classroom..Circular kindergarten …
  • Relate N to the curric
  • N offers perspectives—
  • Respect N , teach about N, make us aware of it…
  • Understand what N offers us--
  • N supplies metaphors for how to live , for how to learn…

essay #2---(due dates for each class are at the bottom of the post)

2nd  Formal Essay —McFarland—Fall—2015

Thom Hartmann—and many other thinkers—believes that the values and beliefs of what he calls the “Younger Culture” are leading humans and our planet in a direction of great danger and calamity. So one reason that Hartmann in his book Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight seems to jump all around in human history, pulling in examples and concepts from deep in our past and from cultures that we may never have even heard of, is that he believes that one solution to this impending calamity is to draw on the wisdom of humans who may have different perspectives than us. He says we should look to the ideas of what he calls the “Older Culture.” (In our movie The Road, the term “carrying the fire” expresses the idea of passing on values and beliefs that benefit civilization.)

In the Afterward of the book, Neale Walsch writes that because you are becoming familiar with the ideas in the book that now you are one of the “Crucial Ones.”  For this paper you will be evaluating Hartmann’s and Walsh’s argument through your own life and experience by looking at some of the following questions:

1.     What do you think of Hartmann’s idea that we can learn how to live more harmoniously on the Earth by adapting ideas from what he calls the “Older Culture”?
2.     What do you think of Walsch’s idea that you are now one of the “Crucial Ones”?
3.     How do you plan to nurture or protect the future?
4.     How do you plan to nurture or protect nature?
5.     What are some beliefs or ways of acting or organizations that you see today that you think actually help other humans and/or the planet?

In order to support your points, you need to use the ideas found in the books, the movie The Road, your research, and in any other handouts, info, etc. that we have access to.

You will need to include in this paper outside sources that look at how we live today, or that suggest long-term consequences of how we live today, or that offer solutions for a better world in order to support your ideas, especially as relates to our relationship with Nature.

You should try to include more than one quote per paragraph whenever possible. Quote length in a paper of this length should be no more than 1-2 lines.

The essay’s page minimum is 6 full pages…(BNDJTM…)

Paragraph topic sentences should start with concepts. Paragraph topic sentences should also feature KEYWORDS, which are taken from the questions that you will be exploring.

For the Tuesday 1A Class: Paper is due Oct 20, Draft day is Oct 13.
For the Thursday 1A  Class: Paper is due Oct 22, Draft day is Oct 15.
For the M/W 102 Class: Paper is due Oct 21, Draft day is Oct 19.

Best of Luck!!
