ESSAY #2 for the ENGLISH 4 class.... (that meets Thursday nites...)

There is a LOT of information in this document…. Do NOT just read this ONE time and think you have it all figured out!!  You need to read this SEVERAL times so that you fully understand what is being asked of you. Of course, if you have questions, you can contact me. 

We started brainstorming 2 weeks ago an activity/event/interaction that can be presented at the STACK Center community event. As you know, the STACK  event is postponed, but it will be rescheduled at a later date. So, your goal for this Essay #2 is to write up a proposal for an activity/event/interaction that can be featured at the STACK Center event.  

You should write this essay as if it is a proposal. (In other words, you are pretending that you are trying to convince the organizers of the STACK event that your activity/event/interaction would be a GREAT addition to the event. Your audience is the city of Hayward.) 

Even though you might not use quotes in a real proposal, for this essay you will be finding and using quotes in your paragraphs. (They actually will help the persuasiveness of the proposal.)

Each proposal question below should be answered in detail. You MUST NOT  just give a one word or one sentence answer.  Your responses to these questions is your proposal.   Once you’ve completed all of the questions, you will compile your responses into a single document. Though I’m not requiring this, you should feel encouraged to design your proposal in Canva. Check out the link and see if you can do this… 

You should include pictures and design layouts of your event in your proposal. When possible, you should do Rule of 3  in answering the questions. 

Proposal Questions:

1. What is the name of your activity/event/interaction?  (you should have a catchy and clever name)
2. Describe in great detail, what exactly is your activity/event/interaction? What will people see at your event? What will they do? How will you decorate your area?
3. What makes your activity/event/interaction innovative?  
4.  As you may recall, The Stack Center will feature five program areas: health and wellness, education and technology, art and recreation, economic development, and outdoor spaces (https://www.stackcenter.org/programs.html).  Your proposed activity/event/interaction should correspond to one of these five or you can propose an entirely new category. Identify the Program Area your activity/event/interaction falls under and explain why you think your activity/event/interaction fits under that category.  You might fit into more than one category. If that’s the case, write why you think it fits into multiple categories.  
5. Who is the audience for your event? Why are you targeting that audience?
6. What information will you be LEARNING from the attendees? 
7. What information will you be SHARING with the attendees?
8. How will you disguise this information, so that your event can be more interactive and you are not just TELLING people things, or ASKING people questions like you are doing some survey. 
9. Identify the challenges that could potentially impede this activity/event/interaction from being successful and describe how you plan to overcome them. 
10. Why do you think this activity/event/interaction will be successful?  
11. Budget 

• What materials will be needed to create your activity/event/interaction?
• How much will the materials cost?
• Where will you get the materials (provide links)
• you are encouraged as much as possible to use repurposed/reused/recycled materials. 

The Page minimum is 7 pages of writing.  WIth pictures etc, the proposal might be as long as 10 pages… 

The proposal essay is due Thursday, April 2nd.
You will be emailing me a PDF of your proposal.

The first draft is on Thursday, March 26th. You will email me (or share on google docs) your paper at that time.

Even though you are working with your team to generate ideas for the  activity/event/interaction, when you write this essay, you will each do your OWN writing. (So, for example, if there are 3 people in your group, I will receive 3 different essays.)

To get started thinking about community, we have 5 things we are doing....

1.  Why do  you think people don't get more involved in the issues that are around them, esp. issues that are related to cities?    Pick the best 3 reasons that you came up with that you think you want to write about...

Keep in mind that you should try to avoid picking reasons that are similar to each other. Once you pick the 3 best that you like, write up 3-4-5 sentences for each one, expanding the discussion of each. (You are essentially creating the topics sentences for each reason.)

Once you watch the movie and read the article, go back to the reasons you came up with for why people don't get more involved. For each of the reasons you came up with, ask yourself  "Does this movie or article address (and maybe even solve) the reason?  I think you will find that a LOT of the issues you came up with for why people don't get involved are addressed by this movie and/or article...

 Please read the Introduction, and Chapter 1 and 2. (pages 1 to 51.)
For the Introduction,  and Chapter 1 please answer this question: Why does the author start with the story of almost dying in the glacier?
For Chapter 2  please answer these 2 questions: What does the title of the chapter mean? What is the problem with "Time becoming unfrozen."
For each question you should do a paragraph of writing. As you are writing and reading, be thinking about how the ideas in the book can be used in our #1 essay.
