hey all.....
here is what we want to have done by tomorrow.
1. Please get all your previous homework (there are 4 so far) posted up on your website under your personal tab. Make it look cool, add pics and video... be sure to write a LOT for each question.
2. Please test your plot's soil by Thursday. After you test it, pls write up the results of what your team discovered.
3. By MONDAY July 15, you should have created a PDF "map" of your team's plot. Depending on your plot's complexity, you may need to make more than one. The goal of the map is for a visitor to your plot to know what they are looking at. And you should include any interesting facts about the plants if you can.

HW for English classes... due on Wed july 10
hey all,
first off, before i give you the HW questions, i want to say a few things about you all.
I want to say that I am completely blown away by every single one of the 18 groups. You are ALL doing amazing work as teams and individuals out in the garden. It is humbling to see how smart, creative, innovative you all are. You are taking the initiative to make your plots so much better than you found them. It is amazing what you are doing! Some of you inherited plots that have problems--old dirt, or weeds, or shade problems, etc-- but you have all begun to figure out ways to improve things. I am blown away!!!
Lets keep rocking !
A couple quick things:
1. Pls dont put weeds or grasses into the compost bins. Just leave them on the ground in a pile and I will get rid of them.
2. If you have something that you need done in your plot--like new water lines for example--just send me an email with a request.
3. Be sure to upload your homework to your website tab.
meanwhile, here are the newest questions:
1. What have you been doing with your plot? (Pls give a lot of detail. Maybe do Rule of 3 with this question.)
2. What are you learning? (Pls give a lot of detail. Maybe do Rule of 3 with this question.)
3. What questions or uncertainties do you have?
4. What do you have planned next for your plot?
5. By this Thursday, you and your team need to do a soil test on your plot. (you can buy a soil tester from Home Depot for $17. Or you can do one of the free tests that you read about on line.)
Be sure to include pictures in your HW that you post on the website...

Home Work for English class -- Due on July 8
Hey everybody,
first off, I wanted to say how deeply impressed I was with all 18 garden plot teams! You all really dug right in, literally, lol--and began to understand and even transform your plots. It was so impressive and exciting! Im sure the spring students who planted the garden would feel really happy to know they have left it in your great hands (and green thumbs, lol)
For the Homework we have several things to do:
1. What are your first impressions of your plot? (pls write 2-3 paragraphs. You can use your 5 senses to giver lots of details about the garden.)
2. What did you do with your plot on the first day? (some groups weeded, some harvested, some observed, some asked questions, some groups did phone research, etc...)
3. What are 2 questions that you have about the garden? (you should each come up with your own questions, so that the group has 2 questions per member if possible.)
4. Please do research on each of the 2 questions--and write up a 1-2 paragraph response of what you learned about each question. Be sure to put it in your own words......avoid plagiarism.... you can do short quotes of course
You should post all of this on your website, along with pictures etc..... ----you should also print a hard copy for me.. or email me link to the website..
On Monday, we are going to have each group share their website with the class on the BIG BIG TV....so you should be sure to start populating the site!

First HW for your Garden work.... this is due on Monday... Julyt 1st
Below are 6 different links....2 are videos and 4 are websites. They are all about SOIL. (we are starting at the bottom, lol)
For this HW, you should first go through the 6 links. Some of them are very short and simple, and some are more complex and detailed. Once you have gone through these links, you have questions to answer. For each question, you should write at least one paragraph. (Dont do short one/two sentence answers.)
We will talk on Monday about getting these paras onto your website.....for now, you can. just do a word doc....
We will talk on Monday about getting these paras onto your website.....for now, you can. just do a word doc....
It is CRUCIAL that you answer these questions in your own words. (you CAN put short quotes in your paras.) To avoid plagiarism, read or watch the source 2-3 times, so that you REALLY understand it---then simply write your para without LOOKING at the original source. It works every time. Here are the questions:
- What IS soil?
- How does it get created?
- Why is important for gardeners to know what kind of soil is in their garden?
- What are the things that we test for when we test soil?
- Which soil test do you like the most, and why?
- What else do you want to say about soil?

HW due on Monday June 24th for English 1A summer class
hey all... so, there are few things to do this weekend.. They are all important. You will be sharing your HW with classmates, so be sure to print out the HW, or have a laptop to show them your work.
The first thing you will do is link to these 3 essays below, and read them. While you are reading them, you should be looking for quotes and ideas that you can use for your essay. These are really good essays. They will give you lots of ideas and quotes that can be used in the paragraphs you will be writing.

Once you read these essays, it is time to start writing your essay. The essay assignment #1 has 4 Questions. (As you know) Please do RULE OF 3 on Qs, 1, 3, and 4. (We will do Q2 later). That will result in 9 Paragraphs that you will write. Be sure to follow the Paragraph Template approach for each paragraph that you write. (its esp. important to use keyword phrases --taken from the essay questions--to start off each para. It is also important to bring in quotes...)

1. Why do you think people don't get more involved in the issues that are around them, esp. issues that are related to cities.
Pick the best 3 reasons that you came up with that you think you want to write about...
Pick the best 3 reasons that you came up with that you think you want to write about...
Keep in mind that you should try to avoid picking reasons that are similar to each other. Once you pick the 3 best that you like, write up 3-4-5 sentences for each one, expanding the discussion of each. (You are essentially creating the topics sentences for each reason.)
2. Pls watch this cool video about this concept called "Participatory Budgeting."
Once you watch it, go back to the reasons you came up with for why people don't get more involved
For each of the reasons you came up with, ask yourself "Does this movie address (and maybe even solve) the reason?"
3. this is a link to CNN video about a guy from India working with the homeless in his community.
Pls watch the video , then answer this question:
What are 2 quotes that stand out to you?
Why did you pick them? (discuss what the quote means to you, or what you think it means, or why it is important idea)
4. Pls go to this link and watch this movie The Passion Project.
here also is a link to the full transcript of the movie...
once you have watched the movie, here is the writing:
What are 2-3 quotes that speak to you.... what do you like about them? why did you pick them? how can you use them in your paper?
