#3 paper: Designing the SIC....the Student Initiative Center. HW for tomorrow.

Hey there, thx for walking around today and looking at the different rooms. As you know, the assignment for paper 3 has to do with the SIC, the Student Initiative Center. We looked at 3 other spaces today to see if we could get inspiration for SIC.

We looked at the old Passion Room, the new Collaborative Projects Center, and the Knowledge Garden. 2 of the classes didn't get into the Collaborative Projects Center, so I posted some pics of it in the post below this one. The pics should give you a pretty good sense of the feel and look they were going for. You can see it doesn't look much like the Passion room, lol.

Tomorrow I will give you the actual #3 paper assignment. For tonight here are the 3 questions to consider about the SIC:

How do you imagine the room being used?
How would you design it?
How would you imagine SIC interacting with the Collaborative Projects Center and the Knowledge Garden?


For Wed, you should type up your first brainstorm (prototype) of what ideas  you have about the 3 questions. Pls bring it to class and be ready to share with the class.

advice for doing Proposal paper

hey there, so the paper is due next Tuesday, July 21st. Pls bring a hard copy. We will also be asking you to supply a digital version later.

Meanwhile, here is some of the advice and guidelines for doing this assignment that we came up with in class:

Use the Design book and pull concepts and quotes from it.
Use Rule of 3--even though it is more of an academic tool, it will work for this.
Use Quotes--they will work, even though is more of a business type paper.

Make the look of the proposal visually interesting. (There are proposal templates you can use.)
Offer details and specific steps in the proposal.

Do a budget.
Do a project timeline.

Include a bio of yourself if you like, that pertains to the project.

Remember, we said you should also include budget for the project.

HW that is due Wed July 8 for 1A

hey there, so in class you worked in groups to prototype and brainstorm around the following Design Challenge:

Design a program/plan/strategy/circus (lol)  for getting community members to enroll @ Chabot.


for your HW tonight you are doing 2 things:

1. look at CH 7 of the Design book--find 3-5 ideas in there that might help your project. For each one you pick, write a couple sentences about how you can use it....

2. Refine and expand the  Brainstorm that you did with your team. (You can go any direction you want...you don't have to stay on what the team was coming up with....)...write up 3-4 paras that explore your project.

so, as you know we are moving into the Design Unit ....
in order to start to get a feel for some of the concepts around Design there are a few things you should do for Tuesday class.

1. Pls bring an object of your choice to class that you like bc of how it is designed. Pls write 2 paras where you explore/explain what it is about  it that you like. (You may find that it is HARD to write about an object.,..in class for example, for many of the objects I shared, I would just say "this is cool." lol.....your job is to bring more specific concepts to the discussion...try Rule of 3 ..



2. Please watch this video:

Of course this video is about education. The question for you to consider: what is this school doing differently than more "typical" high schools? Write 2-3 paras that respond to that question.


3. Pls read Chapter 4 of our Design Book. here are questions to consider: What are 2-3 things about the chapter that make sense to you?  (do 2-3 paras.....)

no class today, Wednesday, July 1st, I am sick

hey there, i have been sick for the last few days, and its not much better today, so i am not coming in, i am really sorry.

of course, bring your paper essay #1 tomorrow to class.

Meanwhile here is the HW that is due tomorrow:

Pls Read Chapter 3--- p 55-74

for the writing here are the questions:

1. What are 3 ideas in the chapter that make sense to you, in other words, as you read them you are thinking "yea, I get this." Put each idea in your own words and summarize it.

2. What is an idea in the chapter that DOESNT make sense to you? Write about why it doesn't make sense.


you will be doing a total of 4 paragraphs....

I realize that the content in these chapters is pretty theoretical--we will make it more grounded and real when we talk in class....




(don't forget the HW from the day before, about chapter 2.....)
