English 1A and 102: Paper #3 updates for the weekend...and next monday

hey there, so we have seen a lot of your essay drafts, and they are looking pretty good!

For next monday we will do another draft day....you should pretend the paper is DUE that day, so that you will use this weekend wisely.... (no LATE papers!)---pls bring 2 copies typed....

here is some advice that we went over in class today...and that you will want to integrate into your paper.

1. you MUST integrate direct quotes into the paper. You MUST pull quotes from Into the Wild. (of course if you want to pull in outside quotes, that is cool too. But dont neglect our book.

2. 1A students need to put 2 (two) quotes in each paragraph. 102 students should also do this. For 1A students it needs to happen in pretty much ALL the body paras. For 102 students, it should happen in at least half the paras.

3. So, we want to try to NOT use Chris' name in the topic sentences of your body paras. Even if the question directly asks (for example) "Why did Chris turn his back on family?" You can answer the question by focusing in on the concept that you are doing...after you do 3-4-5 on the concept, THEN bring in Chris for support.....

4. You are looking to do 6-7-8 questions for this essay... that is a LOT ....soooo, if you end up doing only Rule of 2 on some of the questions, that is fine....

Home work update for 102 and 1A

hey there, so essay #3 is posted on the post below this one...

here is the HW so far.....the main thing is you really should have the book Into the Wild done by now...you also have the assignments below...

1.  (These questions were given out on that email that I sent last week...you were to do 2 paras for each question.)

Why does it seem that Chris turns his back on his family?
Is Chris justified in doing this? Why or why not?
Is it ever justified to turn your back on your family? Why or why not?

2.  (The questions below assigned last Wed and were due today, monday the 13th. you were to do 2-3 paras for each question.)

What role does time alone play in living a “good life.”
What does it mean to live a “good life”?
If you lead what you think is a good life, but other people are hurt by your choices, can you still say you have lead a good life?

3. At the Knowledge Garden today, we reflected on this question: What is the secret to a Good Life? You ALL had really great ideas about this question. The HW for this is to go back into your vision quest brain, and reflect some more on what you said. See if you can write up 2-3 paras that explores your thoughts more...

ALLL of the writing above needs to be brought to class this wed.......

see you@!

English—3rd Formal Essay —McFarland—Spring—2015 for 1A and 102

English—3rd Formal Essay —McFarland—Spring—2015

For this essay you will be looking at Chris McCandless and our book Into The Wild in order to generate a discussion about Chris’ actions that he takes through the course of his short life. The following questions are intended to offer some guidance to you as you build your paper. You do not need to answer all of them. Remember that paragraph topic sentences should start with concepts—concepts that will be taken from your sophisticated and full answers to the questions.

Why does it seem that Chris turns his back on his family?
Is Chris justified in doing this? Why or why not?
Is it ever justified to turn your back on your family? Why or why not?
Is there any value in disconnecting from family (and friends for that matter)?
What does Chris turn towards—that is, what becomes important to him?
Does it matter what you turn towards if you turn your back on family or friends?
What does it mean to “waste your life”?
What role does time alone play in living a “good life.”
What does it mean to live a “good life”?
If you lead what you think is a good life, but other people are hurt by your choices, can you still say you have lead a good life?
What is your opinion of how Chris lived his life?

In order to support your points, you need to use the ideas found in the book, the movie, and in any other handouts, books, etc. that we have access to.
You must average 1-2 quotes per paragragh
Quote length in a paper of this length should be no more than 1-2 lines.
The essay’s page minimum is 6 full pages…(BNDJTM…)
Be careful that you don’t simply retell the novel. Use the episodes to SUPPORT the analytic points you want to make. Paragraph topic sentences should not start with plot types of phrases, but rather with concepts. Paragraph topic sentences should also feature KEYWORDS, which are taken from the essay assignment questions.

What are the Keywords/keyword phrases?
